THE MANTIS SHRIMP


Diversity thrives in the warm waters of Papua New Guinea's Milne Bay Province. Creatures have adapted bizarre behaviour to fill the tiniest ecological niches.

Perhaps the most startling is the Mantis shrimp, a robotic-looking critter with six eyes in two lobes on articulated stalks. There are two common species, one with pincers that punch, and the other that uses it's forelegs to skewer prey like a shish kebab. More inside >>
